If you are wondering just how in the hell shooting the shit on Facebook with my sometime editor JOE CLIFFORD turned into the most anticipated book of 2014, you can read about it HERE and HERE. I know a lot of people have been waiting a long time for this. If it’s any consolation I guess I’ve been waiting all my life. TROUBLE IN THE HEARTLAND hits the shelves on December 1st. Lights Out Tonight
In
June of last year I had a flash story published at SHOTGUN HONEY. I took the
title and my inspiration for it from the Springsteen track of the same name. Eighteen
months down the road and that piece is now about to be published again, this time
it’s alongside stories from guys such as Dennis Lehane and James Grady.

Maybe I should Just Shoot You In The Face
It’s
been a long dry spell for Zelmer Pulp, but after several trips to rehab and one
custodial sentence we’re back with new blood, fresh ideas and clean underwear.
MAYBE I SHOULD JUST SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE is our first collective venture into the
dark, gritty world of noir. For the ZP team that meant they were going home and
it shows. This issue features stories from all the regular ZP offenders,
including new fish, Benoit LeLievre and Gareth Spark. In an attempt to make us more attractive to woman we
have added New Jersey Noir photographer Mark Krajnak to the ZP roster. His
stunning photography appears throughout the book. We are also delighted to have
our old pal and father of Brit Grit Paul D. Brazill along for this ride.
The
Tesla version is available right now for your electronic trickery at the princely
sum of just 99 cents and a dead tree version will be arriving just as soon as
we have slashed and burned enough rainforest. Check out this doozy of a trailer
and then go buy the thing. You won’t regret it. Well, you might, but by then I’ll
be like 3 cent’s richer and probably living in some offshore tax haven. Hammer down!

Zelmer Pulp Is Back!
While working on the
Springsteen-inspired noir collection TROUBLE IN THE HEARTLAND with Gutter
Books, we figured we'd be idiots not to capitalize on that tidal wave and we decided
to start work on a noir collection all our own.
The end result is, MAYBE I SHOULD JUST SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE, a gritty no holds barred take on crime fiction that will leave you beaten, bloody and thirsting for more. New Jersey-based photographer Mark Krajnak is contributing some stunning noir themed photographs to both the Springsteen collection and MISJSYITF, which will add a whole other dimension to our publications. The cover for MISJSYITF (above) is still a work in progress, but you get the idea.
If that wasn’t enough we have added 28.6% more awesome to the ZP gene pool with the permanent addition of Gareth Spark and Benoit Lelievre to the team. Gareth is one of England's leading noir voices and all-around hard-hitting presence, he came onboard as a guest writer for MISJSYITF and we soon realized we would be crazy not to ask him to stick around full time. Ben is the eloquent but brutal mastermind behind the website DEAD END FOLLIES and author of numerous hardcore fiction pieces. There really wasn’t any discussion needed about inviting these two guys to join the party. Something just clicked. It just felt right. And there is no doubt that we will be stronger because of it.
Look out for MISJSYITF soon and for TROUBLE IN THE HEARTLAND in the fall.

Maybe I Should Just Shoot You In The Face?
Apart
from working through the frustratingly slow process of getting our Springsteen
based crime anthology, TROUBLE IN THE HEARTLAND (did I mention both Dennis Lehane
AND Ryan Sayles are in it?) out into the world, it’s been quiet pretty on the
Zelmer Pulp front, too quiet. All that is about to change with this dark hit of Noir. The talented Isaac Kirkman is taking a well earned break, but MAYBE I SHOULD JUST SHOOT YOU IN THE FACE will feature stories from all the other Zelmer regulars, Brain Panowich, Chuck Regan, Ryan Sayles, Chris Leek and our very special guest, Gareth Spark. Add to that an introduction by Brit Grit Legend, Paul D. Brazill and you have a book that will bring world peace, stop global warming and get you pregnant*. This puppy should be rubbing up your leg in the next couple of weeks.
*These are
lies. This book will not do any of those things and any conception that may occur while reading it is purely coincidental.

Springsteen and I AKA Trouble In The Heartland
Let’s roll the clock back a few years…okay, quite a lot of years. Its 1984, I’m fifteen and my face times its breakouts to co-inside perfectly with any social event involving the opposite sex. I steal cigarettes from my pal’s mom, because I think smoking them makes me look cool (trust me kids, it doesn’t, but you’ll probably still do it anyway.) I have a leather jacket, bad grades, and an unhealthy obsession with Pat Benatar. In the middle of all this, Bruce Springsteen releases the BORN IN THE USA album and for me, nothing is ever quite the same again. Here was a dude singing about Vietnam, blue collar Joes and the broken American dream. I may have been living an ocean way, but those songs spoke to me, and I mean directly to me. Dancing in the Dark? You better believe I was. Bruce told me how it was and I listened—I have been listening ever since.
Roll
forwards again to 2014. I’m forty four. The acne is long gone, but now my face
has a permanently bewildered look that comes from the realization I’m middle
aged. I have a pack a day habit that I can’t kick, a wife that I love, a job I
hate and an unhealthy obsession with Pat Benatar. I got to chase my own runaway
American dream for a while and I know that my glory days are largely in the
rearview mirror. I’m good with that (most of the time.) I’m still dancing in
the dark, but I’m a goddamn writer now, so the world can go suck it.
Bruce
Springsteen has now been providing the sound track to my life for better than 25 years
and it should be pretty obvious to most of you that he is a huge
influence on my work as a writer too. He’s the finest storyteller I know (and I
know Isaac Kirkman.)
Anyhow,
last year I was shooting the shit with Joe Clifford and we got to talking about
how much we both dug Bruce Springsteen, and how his songs have many of the same
qualities present in good crime fiction. Boom! We suddenly hit on the idea of a
crime fiction anthology with stories inspired by Springsteen song titles. Joe was
up for editing it, my ZP brother and fellow Springsteen fan, Brian Panowich was
in like Flynn too. The rest of the Zelmer guys weren’t far behind. We started
to invite a few people to contribute stories and the response was completely
overwhelming. Who knew so many top crime writers were Springsteen fans?
What
we first envisaged as a cool little anthology soon became something way, way
bigger than any of us could have imagined. The eight months that followed have
been full of lawyers, contracts, frayed tempers and frustrations, but thanks
largely to Joe’s dogged determination and Ryan Sayles’ unfailing optimism, we
made it. Like the song says: Talk about a
dream, try to make it real.
Chuck Regan has once again delivered a killer cover. This isn’t the final version,
but it’s pretty close to it. TROUBLE IN THE HEARTLAND will be available from
all good bookstores (and probably a few crappy ones too) this summer. Profits
from the anthology will be going to The Bob Woodruff Foundation, who offer help
and support to our veterans and their families, so there really will be no excuse not to hammer down on this one. Sunday, December 22, 2013
ZP Anniversary Sale
Picture the
scene: It’s the last days of 2012 and in a dank basement in some flyover state
nobody can point to on the map, Ryan Sayles paces anxiously behind the
hunched figure of Brain Panowich as he feverishly taps away on an old typewriter.
Ryan’s meds ran out days ago and Brian knows it’s only a matter of time before
there is another ‘incident ’with the neighbor’s chinchilla. He glances at his
Hello Kitty watch and then over at Chuck Regan. Chuck is sitting on the filthy mattress
in the corner; hugging himself, rocking backwards and forwards. His fingers stained
with crayon and blood. He is talking to himself—mumbling really, something about Martians
and Ayn Rand. Brian knows it’s all up to him now...
Several
hours and one ‘incident’ later, Zelmer Pulp is born and the world of genre
fiction gets a zombie wedgie with the release of C’MON AND DO THE APOCOLYPSE. Surprisingly, a few people actually bought it
(not me) and further genrecide followed.
To celebrate
the fact that Zelmer Pulp has now existed for a whole year and nobody has died
or been arrested, the first three ZP titles are now on sale for only 99 cents /
77 pence until the end of 2013. And if you’re too cheap to spend a lousy buck,
you can pick up Brian Panowich’s first Harmon Brown yarn, BABY JUICE for free.
So treat
yourself and then treat your friends and then treat yourself again.
Go on, it’s
Christmas. ZELMER PULP SALE

That Escalated Quickly!
![]() |
Flash fiction doesn’t leave a lot of
room for build-up, so it’s best to start by going for the throat and seeing
where it leads. In these stories Ryan Sayles does just that. He turns on a dim
light and leads the reader down an already claustrophobic path. Active shooter
event? Check. Ugly, failed relationships? Check. Dope fiends making smart
decisions? Check. People seeking out roadkill because that’s the deepest
relationship they can handle? Check. Putting on a soiled Easter Bunny costume
to say goodbye the hard way to your former office colleagues who all foolishly
thought they had the last laugh? Check and double check. Each story is like an
unmarked pill; just swallow it and see what happens. C’mon. It’ll be fun.
The ability
to tell a story with only one or two thousand words that stays with a person for days
afterwards is a rare talent. Ryan Sayles knows this, and what’s more he
has that talent. Read “Uncluttering” and then tell me I’m wrong. These 22
stories are some of the best edgy fiction you will find anywhere, period. And I’m not just saying that because Ryan is a buddy (he doesn't read this blog anyway.)
I’m saying it because I believe it.
THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY is out now in both print and e-book. You may hammer down when
ready.

Five Broken Winchesters
![]() |
| Get it here! |
Most of you
will know Ron Earl Phillips as the head honcho of Shotgun Honey and The Big
Adios. Ron has published all of the Zelmer crew at one time or another and we are
delighted to have his traditional western story, ‘The Last Shot’ in the
collection.
Heath
Lowrance is another guy who needs no introduction, which is a little ironic
seeing as he wrote the one for FIVE BROKEN WINCHESTERS. Heath also contributed
a fantastic flash story featuring his hard-eyed righter of
wrongs and legend of the Weird West, Hawthorne.
This edition also features killer tales from the Zelmer Pulp entertainment collective:
Isaac Kirkman, Ryan Sayles, Brian ‘Yeti Chop’ Panowich and Chuck Regan, who also
painted the cover and once again humbled us with both his artistic and his sexual...err, I mean literary prowess.
My humble contribution,
‘The Guns of Justice’ sees the debut of my scarred bounty hunting heroine,
Justice McCann. Here’s a little taster to hopefully whet you appetite and
loosen you wallet.
The Jailhouse door banged open,
bringing down dust from the rafters and toppling the stack of papers on Wade
Pollock’s desk.
“Goddammit!” Wade said, shading his eyes against the
bright spring sunshine that invaded his office.A man stood in the doorway, he was nearly as wide as he was tall and looked about ready to chew up iron and shit out nails. Wade knew him right off; his picture was pinned up across from his desk. The wanted poster showed a buzzard-eyed killer with a huge beard. It was a good likeness. But Cory Johnson could only truly be appreciated by seeing him in the flesh. Wade twisted in his seat, reaching for the gun belt that hung on the back of his chair.
“Where’s
the sheriff?”
The
female voice stopped Wade cold, his gun half clear of its holster. There was a
dull smack as wood met meat and Johnson collapsed to his knees with a grunt.
Behind him stood a girl—or at least something close to a girl—holding an old
Baker side-by-side, stock first. “You’re lookin’ at him,” Wade said continuing to pull his piece in spite of the fact that he could now see Johnson’s hands were tightly bound, or maybe because of it.
The
girl leaned and spat tobacco juice into the coffee can by the door. It gave
Wade a good look at her face and the terrible scars she carried there.
“What
happened to Miller?” she asked. “Been dead about a month, I’m running things around here now. Wade Pollock’s the name.”
“In that case, this here belongs to you,” she said flatting Johnson completely with a well-aimed kick to his kidneys.
Wade looked from the gasping Cory Johnson to the girl and then to the crowd that had gathered in the street outside. “You best come in then, and close the door, that is unless you want the whole damn town knowing our business.”

FIVE BROKEN WINCHESTERS is available right now for your high-fluting Kindle machine and we
are currently engaged in large scale deforestation to bring you a dead tree
version by the end of the week. So have and it, or as we say here at Zelmer Pulp, Hammer Down!

All Points West
Hey, there’s
a new sheriff in town. Well, a new deputy anyway. I’m excited to be
joining Ron Earl Phillips and Ryan Sayles as a submissions editor on the western
fiction magazine THE BIG ADIOS. I was fortunate enough to have my story, SEEDS
published there a while ago and I have long been an admirer of the quality
stories hosted on the site from such great great western writers as David Cranmer and Heath Lowrance.
Submissions
are always open for high quality western fiction, so get to it!
Talking of Heath
Lowrance, I’m delighted to tell you that the forthcoming Zelmer Pulp collection,
FIVE BROKEN WINCHESTERS will now include a story from Heath, featuring his hard
eyed righter of wrongs, Hawthorne. Heath is one of my favorite writers and I’m
stoked that he will be joining the ZP posse for this one.
This
collection will feature some superb stories that range across the whole
spectrum of western fiction from: Chuck Regan, Isaac Kirkman, Brian Panowich,
Ryan Sayles and special guest, Ron Earl Phillips. FIVE BROKEN
WINCHESTERS will also be the first outing for my ‘deadlier than the male’ Bounty
Hunter, Justice McCann in a hard hitting story of blood and revenge called THE GUNS OF JUSTICE (see what I did there.)
If you want
a taste of what Zelmer Pulp has in store for the Wild and Weird West, then I suggest you fill your hand with Brian Panowich’s cracking Harmon Brown yarn, BABY JUICE or indeed any of
Heath Lowrance’s excellent HAWTHORNE novellas.
Well, are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

No Batteries Required - FREE Analog Robots
Hey look, free shit!
One thing I've noticed recently is that 97.6% of all giveaways on Goodreads etc. are limited to those who reside in the good old US of A. So just for a change, here's one for this side of the pond (that's the side that drinks tea with milk and drives on the left).
If you live in the UK and would like to own a print copy of HEY, THAT ROBOT ATE MY BABY, but are too skint or tight to buy one then listen up, because I'm giving one away for free.
When Orson Scott Card, author of the bestselling sci-fi novel ENDER'S GAME was asked to comment on Zelmer Pulp's science fiction magnum opus he had this to say: "This is private property, get out before I call security. And put your pants back on."
So there you have it. I'll even spring for the postage and sign the damn thing if you want me to, although I should point out that my signature will put a significant dent in any potential resale value.
To be in with a shout of winning this magnificent tome, just leave a comment on this post. Let's make June 16th the cut off date, after which time I will pick the winner at random, possibly from a hat. In the (quite likely) event of nobody bothering to comment by the 16th, then forget about it, the deals off. Got it? Well then, what are you waiting for?
While we are on the subject, HEY, THAT ROBOT ATE MY BABY, has received a couple of killer five star reviews recently (take a look HERE if you don't believe me). But we can always use a few more, so belly up to the bar people.

Fiction For Your Face
Here is the
second in my ongoing series of posts featuring pictures of Brian Panowich’s
hand.
This one was
taken yesterday at the Augusta Book Exchange where Brian used that very same hand to
sign copies of Zelmer Pulp’s first two releases, C’MON DO THE APOCOLYPSE and HEY, THAT ROBOT ATE MY BABY. He also used
it to scratch himself a lot, so if you shook it I recommend plenty of hot water
and carbolic soap.
For news and
information on future events featuring the Zelmer crew you can now visit the
all new Zelmer Pulp website at www.zelmerpulp.com
This wonderful web portal will host a variety
of entertaining and informative articles about seasonal vegetables and South
American rustic pottery. It will also be
the place to go for all the news on future Zelmer releases, guest contributors
and other exciting and potentially illegal projects involving Emus. So bookmark
it and visit often.

I love the smell of paper in the morning
As much as I
like the convenience of e-books, nothing beats holding a real honest to goodness book in
your hand. That's especially true if the book in your hand just happens to be
your own.
The print
edition of Zelmer Pulp's HEY, THAT ROBOT ATE MY BABY! is now available at all good pan-galactic
booksellers. Well, those that have the letter Z in their name anyway. Analog may be old school, but if like me, you enjoy drawing handlebar moustaches on pictures
of Chuck Regan, or if you want to underline all of the F-words in Brian Panowich’s
story with your My Little Pony fountain pen, then this is exactly what you've been waiting for.
In the interests of full disclosure, I should point out that while the book is partly mine, the hand in this picture belongs entirely to Brian. Except on weekends.

Hey, That Video Pimped My Book! #2
The Zelmer
office is a hive of activity at present. Well I say office, it’s really just a rusted
out VW van parked on Ryan Sayles’ front lawn. We were going to move it to a better
neighborhood, you know one with fewer meth labs, but Brian Panowich sold
the tires to buy himself a Batman utility belt from Toys R Us, so it looks
like we’re stuck here for now.
Anyway, back
to the whole hive of activity thing. The print edition of HEY, THAT ROBOT ATE
MY BABY! will be available in a couple of weeks. Then it’s on to our next
venture, which is due to hit the bookshelves this summer. I can’t say too
much yet, but we have some awesome guest authors lined up for it.
In the
meantime, why not click on the linky-thing to the right and buy this one while you're waiting. You would make an old man very, very happy if you did. No, not me, I'm talking about the old man who lives in my garage, he's easily amused... and he smells funny, and spits at the neighbors. But this is all besides the point, forget I mentioned him and just buy the book. It's guaranteed to amaze and offend in equal measure.

Zelmer Pulp - Keep watching the skies
Citizens of Earth, the countdown has begun for a full on
assault of the Sci-Fi genre by ZELMER PULP.
All the stories for our next release: HEY, THAT ROBOT ATE
MY BABY! Have been turned in and as we speak they are being formatted for world
domination.
It's an ambitious book for us, and we think it can hold
its own with anything out there. So look out for it later this month, and don't say
we didn't warn you. This ain't your daddy's science fiction. Here are some teasers, just to get you in the
mood.
GEEK SQUAD 2.0 by Brian Panowich - In the 60’s and 70’s they did it with a bullet. In the 80’s and 90’s they did
it with the media, but today if you want someone dead, it’s as easy as a Google
search. The Geek Squad, bringing assassination to the modern age, but still
can’t get dates for the prom.
